Tuition by field of study

Lithuanian universities set fees per programme, but the pattern is clear: business, humanities and social sciences are the cheapest, engineering, IT and sciences cost about a quarter more, and medicine, dentistry and the arts cost the most. The ranges below cover every English programme in the national catalogue that has a published non-EU fee, at €1 = ₹106.27 (European Central Bank reference rate, 23 October 2026).

Medicine and dentistry

Only two universities teach medicine in English: LSMU in Kaunas and Vilnius University. Fees for 2026/27:

  • LSMU Medicine: ₹14 lakh (€12,800) a year in years I–III, ₹14 lakh (€13,300) in years IV–VI, about ₹83 lakh (€78,300) for six years.
  • LSMU Odontology: ₹14 lakh (€13,600) in years I–III, ₹15 lakh (€14,100) in years IV–V.
  • VU Medicine: ₹15 lakh (€14,100) a year, about ₹90 lakh (€84,600) for six years.

Full budgets are on the MBBS in Lithuania page.

One-off costs in the first year

  • Application fee: ₹10,600–21,300 (€100–200) at most universities (LSMU charges ₹15,900 (€150) plus ₹26,600 (€250) registration; Šiauliai State UAS only ₹5,310 (€50)). It is not refunded.
  • Registration fees: some universities add one when you accept, for example ₹21,300 (€200) at VILNIUS TECH and ₹5,310 (€50) at MRU.
  • English test: if you do not have IELTS, university tests cost nothing to ₹5,310 (€50).
  • Apostille, translations and notarisation of your school or degree documents.
  • Residence permit: the state fee and the VFS service fee, ₹11,700 (€110) each; see residence permit.
  • Health insurance for the permit, with at least ₹11 lakh (€10,000) cover.
  • Proof of funds: not a cost, but you must show ₹9.3 lakh (€8,715) for a one-year permit filed in 2027, in addition to paid tuition.
  • Dorm deposit: up to ₹63,800 (€600) at VILNIUS TECH, refundable.
  • Flight from India to Vilnius, with one or two connections.

When you pay and what happens if the permit is refused

Almost every Lithuanian university wants tuition before it issues the mediation letter for your residence permit. Policies on refunds differ, so read them before you pay:

  • Full refund (minus bank charges) if the permit is refused: VILNIUS TECH (tuition and registration fee), Klaipėda State UAS, VIKO (minus ₹5,740 (€54)), Klaipėda University.
  • Refund on request: KTU (form within 30 days, one to two months to pay out), Vilnius Business College, SMK.
  • Partial: Šiauliai State UAS refunds 90% if the permit is refused; ISM refunds everything minus ₹53,100 (€500).
  • No published rule: Vilnius University, VMU. Ask in writing.

From the second year, most universities let you pay per semester.

How to pay from India

Fees are paid in euros. The options are a SWIFT transfer from an Indian bank under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, a payment through Flywire (which VU and VMU use for application fees and some universities for tuition), or a disbursement from your education loan. Above ₹10 lakh a year, banks collect TCS on education remittances, which you can claim back against your income tax; remittances paid from an education loan are exempt. Our education loan page explains the bank side.

How we convert fees

All rupee figures on this site use the European Central Bank reference rate of 23 October 2026, €1 = ₹106.27, rounded to one decimal of a lakh. Universities publish fees in euros, and some only for the coming year, so an amount may change between our update and your payment. Each university page links to its official fee list.

Tuition fees in Lithuania: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to study in Lithuania for Indian students?
Tuition is ₹2.7–4.8 lakh (€2,500–4,500) a year for most bachelor's degrees and ₹4.9–6.9 lakh (€4,600–6,500) for most master's. Living costs in Vilnius are around ₹63,800–85,000 (€600–800) a month for a student who lives in a dorm or shared flat. Medicine costs ₹14–15 lakh (€12,800–14,100) a year in tuition alone.
Is education free in Lithuania for Indian students?
No. State-funded free places for full-time students are only for EU citizens and a few groups of foreigners. Indian students pay tuition, but some universities give merit waivers: VILNIUS TECH offers free study with 80% marks, KTU considers every applicant for a waiver, and ISM gives up to 50% by test.
Do I have to pay the full year's tuition before the visa?
Usually yes. Most Lithuanian universities ask for the first year's tuition, or at least one semester, before they issue the mediation letter you need for the residence permit. Check the refund rule before you pay.
Which is the cheapest university in Lithuania?
The lowest fees are at state colleges: ₹2.7 lakh (€2,500) a year at Šiauliai State UAS and ₹2.9 lakh (€2,750) at Kauno kolegija and Klaipėda State UAS. Among universities, the cheapest bachelor's start at about ₹3.4–3.5 lakh (€3,200–3,250) at KTU, VU, MRU, Klaipėda University and ISM.
Are fees paid in euros or rupees?
In euros, usually by bank transfer or through Flywire. Indian banks charge a margin on the exchange rate and a SWIFT fee, so the amount debited in rupees will be slightly higher than our conversion.
