Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU): Medicine Fees, FMGE Results and Admission from India

LSMU in Kaunas is Lithuania's medical university and the only Lithuanian institution whose graduates appear in India's FMGE statistics. About a quarter of its 8,000 students come from abroad, and India is one of the four countries most represented on campus.

Why LSMU is the main choice for medicine in Lithuania

Medicine has been taught in Kaunas since 1919, and the Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1922. The present university was formed in 2010 by joining the Kaunas University of Medicine with the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy. It runs the Kaunas Clinics, the largest hospital in the Baltic states, where students do most of their clinical training.

Indian families shortlist LSMU for a few clear reasons. It has the longest record of teaching medicine in English in the country and a large international community: about a quarter of its students are from abroad, and Indians are among the four biggest groups alongside students from Israel, Sweden and Germany. The fee is lower than at Vilnius University, the entrance test is short and online, and a NEET score of 650 replaces it altogether.

What LSMU is not: a cheap MBBS. At ₹14 lakh a year for tuition, it costs more than medicine in Bulgaria or Georgia. You are paying for an EU degree, smaller groups and a well-equipped hospital.

Medicine costs ₹14 lakh (€12,800) a year in years I–III and ₹14 lakh (€13,300) in years IV–VI. Odontology costs ₹14 lakh (€13,600) in years I–III and ₹15 lakh (€14,100) in years IV–V. The table shows the first-year rate.

Six-year cost of medicine

At 2026/27 rates, tuition alone is:

  • years I–III: 3 × ₹14 lakh (€12,800);
  • years IV–VI: 3 × ₹14 lakh (€13,300);
  • total: about ₹83 lakh (€78,300).

Add housing at ₹8,610–26,600 (€81–250) a month, food and transport, the residence permit renewals, health insurance and books. Our MBBS in Lithuania page has a full six-year budget, and education loan explains how Indian banks treat it.

For medicine, odontology, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, non-EU students pay a deposit of half the yearly tuition to confirm the place. For other programmes the deposit is the full year's fee.

Scholarships

LSMU says plainly that it gives no financial aid to international students in English programmes. Ignore any agent who promises an "LSMU scholarship". The realistic ways to reduce the cost are an education loan and, for strong NEET scorers, saving the time and fee of the entrance test.

NMC checklist

Before you pay, check the programme against the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021:

  • Duration: at least 54 months of study. LSMU medicine is six years, so this is met.
  • Medium: the whole course in English.
  • Internship: at least 12 months at the same university abroad. Ask LSMU how the final year of clinical practice is documented, and keep the reply.
  • Licence: you must be eligible for a licence to practise in Lithuania, as a Lithuanian graduate would be. Ask what language level the Lithuanian licensing body requires.
  • NEET: you must qualify NEET before admission, even if you take the LSMU test instead of using the score.
  • In India: pass FMGE (or NExT once it replaces FMGE) and complete the internship the NMC sets.

The NMC changes these rules from time to time. Read the current text on the NMC website before you sign anything.

FMGE results of LSMU graduates

LSMU is listed in the NBEMS reports under its old and new names. These are all rows we found:

ExamAppearedPassed
2015–2018 (four years combined)30
201911
202020
2021 and 2022no Lithuanian row in the reports
202341
202452
June 202531
December 202510
Total195

Two things follow. The numbers are tiny: few LSMU graduates have sat FMGE so far. And a pass rate calculated from one to five candidates a year says almost nothing about teaching quality. Look instead at what the course covers and how well you prepare. More in FMGE pass rate of Lithuanian graduates.

NEET and the entrance test

You can enter LSMU medicine in one of two ways:

  • With a score: NEET 650 or more, UCAT 2,100, MCAT 511 or IMAT 57. You skip the test.
  • With the LSMU test: an online motivational interview and a 90-minute multiple-choice exam of 30 biology and 30 chemistry questions. The results come the next day.

LSMU also runs a ten-week online Pre-Med course for ₹2.3 lakh (€2,200). In 2027 there are two sessions, 1 February to 9 April and 26 April to 2 July. It is optional, but it helps students who are weak in biology or chemistry in English.

English: B1 level is enough. You can show a certificate or pass LSMU's English test with at least 50%.

Career after LSMU

Graduates who want to work in the EU usually go on to a residency; Lithuanian or the language of another EU country becomes necessary at that point. Those who return to India must pass the screening test and do an internship. The health-science bachelor's and master's programmes, such as physiotherapy and public health, lead to jobs in clinics and research, mostly with Lithuanian. See after graduation.

Admission step by step

  1. Apply online between 1 November 2026 and 6 July 2027 with your Class 12 mark sheet (physics, chemistry, biology), passport and English proof.
  2. After positive preliminary feedback, pay the ₹15,900 (€150) fee.
  3. Book the online test and interview, or send your NEET 650+ scorecard.
  4. Accept the offer, pay the ₹26,600 (€250) registration fee and the deposit of half a year's tuition.
  5. LSMU issues the mediation letter, and you apply for the residence permit; see residence permit.

Campus and dormitories

LSMU's main buildings are in central Kaunas, and the Kaunas Clinics are a short bus ride away. The university has several dorms; the three most used by international students are:

  • Dorm 5: ₹8,610–12,400 (€81–117) a month;
  • Dorm 8: ₹10,700–15,300 (€101–144);
  • Dorm 1: ₹15,900–26,600 (€150–250).

Kaunas is cheaper than Vilnius, and the large group of Indian medical students means you will find others to cook and celebrate festivals with. Read studying in Kaunas.

LSMU Kaunas: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total MBBS fee at LSMU for Indian students?
Medicine costs ₹14 lakh (€12,800) a year in years I–III and ₹14 lakh (€13,300) in years IV–VI for 2026/27. Six years of tuition come to about ₹83 lakh (€78,300), before housing, living costs and fees, if the rates do not rise.
Does LSMU accept NEET?
Yes. A NEET score of 650 or more exempts you from LSMU's entrance test. UCAT 2,100, MCAT 511 or IMAT 57 are also accepted. You still need a qualifying NEET result to meet NMC rules for practising in India.
What is the LSMU FMGE pass rate?
It is based on very few candidates. Across the NBEMS reports from 2015 to December 2025, 19 LSMU graduates took the FMGE and 5 passed. In 2021 and 2022 no Lithuanian row appears at all. Such small numbers do not give a reliable pass rate.
What is the LSMU entrance exam like?
It is held online and has two parts: a motivational interview and a 90-minute multiple-choice test with 30 biology and 30 chemistry questions. Results come the next day. Test sessions for 2027 run from 12 January to 15 July 2027.
Is there a hostel at LSMU?
Yes. LSMU dormitories cost about ₹8,610–26,600 (€81–250) a month depending on the building: Dorm 5 is the cheapest at ₹8,610–12,400 (€81–117), Dorm 1 the most expensive at ₹15,900–26,600 (€150–250).
Does LSMU give scholarships to international students?
No. LSMU states that it offers no financial aid to international students in English-taught programmes.
