Why choose Vilnius University
VU is the university Lithuanians themselves rate first. It is the oldest in the Baltic states, the largest in the country and the one with the widest choice in English: economics and business, physics and lasers, biology and bioinformatics, mathematics, software engineering, languages, law and medicine. Its campus is spread across Vilnius, with the historic courtyards in the Old Town and the science faculties in Saulėtekis, where most students live.
For an Indian student the main reasons to pick VU are three. First, the breadth: you can apply to up to three programmes with one application. Second, the sciences: laser physics, biochemistry and bioinformatics at VU are research fields with international labs, and master's students can join them. Third, the name: on a CV, Vilnius University is the Lithuanian university most employers abroad recognise.
The trade-off is that VU asks for more than most Lithuanian universities: a higher English score, a strict limit on the gap after school and early payment.

Tuition and other costs
Business, economics and humanities bachelor's degrees cost ₹3.5–4.7 lakh (€3,250–4,437) a year. IT, data and science bachelor's cost ₹4.6–5.9 lakh (€4,300–5,538). Master's degrees in management, law and communication cost about ₹4.9–5.8 lakh (€4,600–5,500); sciences, IT and finance master's cost ₹6.4–7 lakh (€6,000–6,550).
On top of tuition, plan for:
- the ₹10,600 (€100) application fee;
- the ₹21,300 (€200) medicine entrance exam fee, if you apply for medicine and do not have NEET 650+;
- the residence permit fee and VFS charges (see residence permit);
- a dormitory place at ₹7,440–27,600 (€70–260) a month, or a private room in Vilnius at about twice that;
- living costs; our cost of living page gives a monthly budget for Vilnius.
Scholarships
VU has little money for non-EU bachelor's students. Two options are worth knowing about:
- a full tuition waiver for the five most motivated non-EU master's applicants each year (the 2026 deadline was 1 April, so apply early in the cycle);
- a one-off ₹1.1 lakh (€1,000) admission scholarship from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, offered for September 2026 entry.
India is not on the list of countries eligible for Lithuanian state scholarships at VU. More options are on our scholarships page.
Medicine at Vilnius University
VU teaches a six-year integrated Medicine programme and a five-year Dentistry programme in English. Medicine costs ₹15 lakh (€14,100) a year for 2026/27. The university publishes two different Dentistry fees, ₹15 lakh (€14,000) and ₹16 lakh (€15,000); ask the admissions office to confirm the figure in writing before you apply.
Admission is by an online entrance exam (fee ₹21,300 (€200)). Exam sessions in 2026 ran from 22 January to 23 July, and non-EU applicants had to sit it by 14 May so the permit could be processed. The exam is waived if you have:
- NEET 650 or more (valid for two years);
- MCAT 500 or more, a qualifying BMAT result or IMAT 50 or more.
NMC requirements
To practise in India after a foreign medical degree, you must meet the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021. Check each point against the programme before you pay:
- the course lasts at least 54 months, followed by an internship of at least 12 months at the same foreign university;
- the whole course is taught in English;
- you study the subjects the NMC lists, including clinical training;
- you become eligible for a licence to practise medicine in Lithuania, on the same terms as a Lithuanian graduate;
- you qualify NEET before you start, and later pass the screening test (FMGE now, NExT when it starts) and do a further internship in India.
The Lithuanian programme is six years including clinical rotations. Ask VU in writing how the final-year practice and the licence to practise in Lithuania fit the NMC's internship and registration conditions; the NMC has refused graduates whose internship did not match the rules. Our MBBS in Lithuania guide covers this in detail.
FMGE results
Vilnius University does not appear in any NBEMS FMGE performance report from 2015 to 2025. That means no VU graduate sat the screening test in those years, or too few to be listed: the English Medicine programme is still young for Indian students. There is no pass rate to compare, so do not believe an agent who quotes one. The only Lithuanian university in the NBEMS tables is LSMU; see the LSMU page.
Career after VU
VU graduates have the strongest network in Vilnius, where most international employers in the country are based: IT and fintech companies, shared-service centres, laser and biotech firms. Business and IT graduates find English-speaking jobs most easily; humanities and law graduates usually need Lithuanian. After graduation you can get a 12-month permit to look for work; see after graduation.
Admission for Indian students
- Choose up to three programmes and apply online between 1 December 2026 and 1 May 2027; pay the ₹10,600 (€100) fee.
- Upload your Class 10 and 12 mark sheets (or degree and transcript for master's), passport, English test result and motivation letter.
- If you finished school more than five years ago, you are not eligible as a non-EU applicant: VU does not count work experience as part of the gap.
- After a pre-acceptance letter, confirm your offer within 7 working days and pay the first year's tuition within 15 calendar days.
- The university then sends a mediation letter, and you file the residence permit application with the Migration Department and VFS.
VU does not publish a tuition refund policy for a refused permit. Ask for one before you pay, and keep the reply. Our admission guide explains apostille, translations and the timeline.
Campus and accommodation
Most international students live in the Saulėtekis student area in the east of Vilnius, close to the science and economics faculties, or in Old Town dorms near the central buildings. Rooms cost ₹7,440–27,600 (€70–260) a month by the 2025 price list, with shared kitchens. Students at the Kaunas faculty pay ₹13,800–16,500 (€130–155). Vilnius has an Indian grocery and several Indian restaurants; see studying in Vilnius.
