What makes VMU different
VMU was founded in 1922, closed by the Soviet authorities and re-established in 1989 with help from the Lithuanian community abroad. It kept the American idea of artes liberales: in a bachelor's degree you take courses outside your main subject, and you can add a minor. For a student who is not yet sure between, say, business and political science, that flexibility is the main reason to come here.
VMU also covers fields that are rare elsewhere in Lithuania in English: agronomy and sustainable bio-business at its Agriculture Academy, music production and performing arts, sociology and anthropology.

Budget
A bachelor's in business, economics, politics or sociology costs ₹3.6 lakh (€3,400) a year, close to the lowest fee at a Lithuanian public university. Biology, biotechnology, environmental science, informatics and English philology cost ₹4.7 lakh (€4,400). Sports studies cost ₹6.4 lakh (€6,000), and the arts programmes are much more expensive.
The university dormitory charges about ₹740–850 (€7–8) a day for a bed, roughly ₹22,300–25,500 (€210–240) a month, and places are not guaranteed. Many VMU students rent a shared flat in the centre of Kaunas instead.
Scholarships
VMU offers 25–90% tuition waivers to students from a list of priority countries. India is not on it. Once you are a VMU student, you can compete for semester fee reductions, and VMU bachelor's graduates get 25% off a VMU master's.
After graduation
Business, logistics and IT graduates look for work in Kaunas's service centres and logistics firms or move to Vilnius. Biotechnology and molecular biology graduates have openings in Lithuania's life-science companies, often after a master's. Read after graduation for the permits.
Admission for Indian students
- Class 12 (for bachelor's) or degree (for master's) with a transcript of at least 60% CGPA.
- English translation of every document, notarised and apostilled.
- English at B2: IELTS 5.5–6.5, TOEFL iBT 87–109, PTE 59 or Duolingo 100–125, depending on the programme; an official document proving earlier study in English is accepted.
- A motivation letter of 1,200–3,000 characters and a CV.
- A passport valid for at least two more years.
VMU issues the mediation letter for the residence permit after you sign the study agreement and pay tuition. The permit takes at least two to three months, so apply early. VMU does not publish a refund rule for a refused permit; ask before paying. See our admission guide.
Living in Kaunas
VMU's main buildings are in the centre of Kaunas, near Laisvės alėja, the pedestrian main street. The city is compact, so most students walk or take a short bus ride. More on studying in Kaunas.
