Vilnius University suits students with strong English who want to live in the capital. Details are on the LSMU and Vilnius University pages.
Six-year budget in rupees
At 2026/27 rates and €1 = ₹106.27 (European Central Bank reference rate, 23 October 2026), a realistic budget for LSMU looks like this:
- tuition for six years: ₹83 lakh (€78,300);
- living costs at about ₹63,800 (€600) a month for 72 months: ₹46 lakh (€43,200);
- residence permit renewals, insurance and fees: ₹3.2–4.3 lakh (€3,000–4,000);
- flights home once a year: ₹3.2–4.8 lakh (€3,000–4,500).
The total is about ₹1.4 crore–1.4 crore (€127,500–130,000). Universities may raise fees during the course, and the rupee usually loses value against the euro over six years, so add a reserve. Most families fund part of it with an education loan.
NMC conditions, point by point
The NMC's 2021 regulations for foreign medical graduates apply to anyone who started a foreign medical course after 18 November 2021. The key conditions and how they relate to Lithuania:
- Duration: at least 54 months of study. Both Lithuanian programmes are six years.
- Internship abroad: at least 12 months at the same university where you studied. Ask your university how the final-year clinical practice is certified.
- English medium: the full course must be in English.
- Subjects: the curriculum must include the subjects the NMC lists, including community medicine and clinical postings.
- Licence: you must be registered or eligible to be registered to practise in Lithuania, like a Lithuanian graduate.
- NEET: a qualifying result before you start.
- In India: the screening test (FMGE, to be replaced by NExT) and an internship in India.
The NMC can change its rules, as it has done several times since 2021. Read the current regulation on the NMC website, and get the university's answers in writing.
FMGE: what the data shows
Only LSMU graduates appear in the NBEMS reports, and in small numbers: 19 candidates between 2015 and December 2025, of whom 5 passed. Vilnius University graduates do not appear at all. With one to five candidates a year, a percentage pass rate is meaningless. Our page on the FMGE pass rate of Lithuanian graduates shows every row and explains how to read it.
Who should not choose Lithuania for MBBS
- Families whose total budget is under ₹80–90 lakh: Bulgaria, Georgia or Central Asia cost less, though with their own trade-offs.
- Students who want to return to India straight after graduation and rely on a large peer group and coaching ecosystem for FMGE: these exist mainly around Russia, Kazakhstan and Georgia.
- Students who are not ready to learn Lithuanian: clinical years involve patients who speak it.
How to apply
The application window for September 2027 opens on 1 November 2026 at LSMU and on 1 December 2026 at Vilnius University. Both universities want NEET-qualified applicants with physics, chemistry and biology in Class 12. The steps, test dates and document list are on MBBS admission in Lithuania.
