Is MBBS in Lithuania Valid in India? What the NMC Rules Say and What to Check Before You Pay

A Lithuanian medical degree can lead to practice in India, but "NMC approved" is the wrong question. The NMC does not keep a list of approved foreign universities. It sets conditions that you, the graduate, must meet. Whether your Lithuanian degree is valid in India depends on meeting all of them.

The conditions that matter

  1. NEET qualified before admission.
  2. At least 54 months of medical study, in English.
  3. At least 12 months of internship at the same foreign university.
  4. Eligible for a licence to practise in Lithuania.
  5. Screening test in India (FMGE now, NExT later) and an internship in India.

Points 1, 2 and 5 are easy to check. Points 3 and 4 are where students get into trouble: ask LSMU or Vilnius University in writing how the final-year practice is documented and what a graduate needs for the Lithuanian licence.

What the FMGE data says

Only LSMU appears in the NBEMS tables: 19 candidates from 2015 to December 2025, 5 passed. Vilnius University graduates do not appear. The numbers are too small for a meaningful pass rate. See FMGE pass rate.

Red flags from agents

  • "NMC approved university" — no such thing.
  • "No NEET needed" — needed for practice in India.
  • A quoted FMGE pass rate for Vilnius University — there is no data.

Is MBBS in Lithuania valid in India: Frequently Asked Questions

Is LSMU NMC approved?
There is no NMC approval for foreign universities. LSMU's six-year English programme can meet the NMC's conditions if the internship, licence and other requirements are satisfied. LSMU graduates have taken FMGE in small numbers since at least 2015.
