Indians in Lithuania: How Big the Community Is, Where It Lives and Where to Get Help

The Indian community in Lithuania has grown fast: from about 1,000 Indian citizens with residence permits in 2021 to about 7,400 on 1 September 2026. India is now among the five largest countries of origin of international students, together with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Morocco and Belarus.

How the community grew

  • 2021: 1,057 Indian citizens with residence permits.
  • Start of 2024: 4,668.
  • Start of 2025: 7,207.
  • 1 September 2026: about 7,400, out of almost 227,000 foreigners with permits.

Most live in Vilnius and Kaunas. Students cluster around Vilnius University, VILNIUS TECH and the colleges in Vilnius, and around LSMU and KTU in Kaunas.

Embassy and consular help

The Embassy of India in Vilnius (Gedimino pr. 12) handles passports, attestation and emergencies; register with it after you arrive. In India, the Lithuanian Embassy is in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, but residence permit applications go through VFS.

Community life

Indian student groups at the larger universities organise Diwali, Holi and Independence Day events, and help newcomers find rooms and part-time work. University international offices and buddy programmes are the official support line.

An academic study put the number at about 1,500 in 2025; no exact 2026 figure has been published. Overall, 7,400 Indian citizens held Lithuanian residence permits on 1 September 2026, many of them workers.
